When to Hire a Business Coach

By Myriam Callegarin • May 15th, 2010

Considering that over 50% of small businesses fail within the first 5 years, and that many global businesses are at risk, entrepreneurs are continuously facing major challenges while not having the time to effectively deal with them.

A business coach can help you when:

  • You want to start your own business more effectively, and to shorten the “trial-and-error phase”.
  • You are feeling overwhelmed by too many ideas, goals and responsibilities.
  • Your business is not profitable as you would like it to be.
  • You want to change something in your business and are not sure how to do it
  • You need to make important strategic decisions (e.g. add new services, expand abroad, hire new staff, outsource, etc.)
  • Your business is leading you to burnout, family problems, health problems.

A good business coach:

  • Is an investment for a more profitable and sustainable business.
  • Helps you measure progress and results by establishing clear goals and milestones with you.
  • Provides a big-picture approach when you are too immersed in your daily duties – such as meetings, personnel management, sales numbers and marketing strategies – to be objective and make smart strategic decisions.
  • Doesn’t provide “ready-made” solutions but helps you see beyond your immediate problem, get clear on the outcome you want, on the resources you have that you may not have considered, and develop the solutions that you feel comfortable with.
  • Takes you out of your comfort zone into uncomfortable waters to create new perspectives and new habits. If you want everything to stay the same, you don’t need a coach.
  • Teaches you how to put structures in place that you will be able to use even when you don’t work with your coach any longer.
  • Is professionally trained, works according to the Code of Ethics established by the International Coach Federation, has extensive business development experience and charges between € 120 and € 450 per hour. Business coaches who charge lower fees are usually either inexperienced or “between jobs”, so they may cost you more in the long run, both in terms of time and money.

Coaching only works when:

  • You are open for different perspectives and for real change.
  • You are seriously ready to take responsibility for your actions and your success, and to recognize that a possible slow progress at some stage means there is an underlying issue that needs to be resolved first.
  • You are ready to be challenged by your coach, to work on possible limiting beliefs as well as behaviours that are sabotaging your success.
  • There is mutual trust and respect between you and your coach.
