The Strategic Approach in Your Job Search

By Myriam Callegarin • January 21st, 2010

There are 3 main approaches for a job search:

1) The Random Approach:
You job search activities are sometimes intense, sometimes in stand-by. You do not really care about what you really want, about how others perceive you, and whether what you can offer is valuable or not. You just follow any opportunity that comes across, hoping it will lead to getting a job.

2) The “Somewhat” Organized Approach:
You invest time and energy in your job search, but without a clear strategy and an effective action plan. You know that networking can help and collect hundreds of contacts, without really knowing how to make them work for you. You  are afraid of limiting your possibilities if you focus on a specific  area. During some weeks you send out lots of job applications. If you are invited to interviews, you wonder why your performance is often “just average”.

3) The Strategic Approach:
You build a personal strategy and follow a structured path that helps you clearly identify what you want , find the right people, and communicate your value effectively. You know how to maximise your network’s potential, without overdoing it. You feel in control and are ready to successfully manage opportunities when they arise.

Which of these approaches will help you get the job you want, faster and more effectively?

Even though most professionals would answer: “The Strategic Approach”, they usually apply the “Somewhat Organized Approach”.

Which approach will help you achieve your goal?Is this the reason why so many professionals struggle to get a job for months, if not years?

Or is this the reason why they do get a job within a short timeframe, but after one year they feel frustrated and think of changing again?

Most professionals do not apply a Strategic Approach for two main reasons:

  1. They do not know how to do it.
  2. They do not see the benefits.

Benefits from applying the Strategic Approach

  • You increase your self-esteem and self-confidence because you know you provide value.
  • You know how to interact with contacts and potential employers (including during informational interviews).
  • You provide a clear message in your cover letters, CV and resumes.
  • You feel focused and in control during job interviews.
  • You save a lot of time and energy!

Would you like to apply the Strategic Approach  to get the job you want?
