Engaging vs. Expecting: Outcome Leaders Exchange – April 19

By Myriam Callegarin • April 19th, 2010

Hello!

I really enjoyed tonight’s Leaders’ Exchange – a great tele-conference with nice, bright and extraordinary people from around the globe!

The Topic we discussed was  “Engaging vs. Expecting”

Members in our Leaders Exchange are managers, executives, entrepreneurs and small business owners, consultants and university professors. We are all in different positions and sectors, each one of us has different needs and expectations related with “engagement”, and yet tonight it was great to see how many things we do have in common, including similar challenges, and the strong desire to take action to overcome them.

Outcome

Among others, we discussed what it takes to engage others, and here are our major conclusions.

We found that in order to Engage others the following is important:

  • Know what we want
  • Have others see the outcome / clear vision
  • Have others see the benefits / value from the engagement
  • Clear roles and responsibilities
  • Communicate the importance of the other people’s contribution
  • Feel motivated ourselves first of all
  • Trust -  be trusted/trustworthy
  • Understand that every person has different time needs (for example one person may take longer to “see” the vision)
  • Accept that some people may simply not be ready or willing to be involved

Book Recommendation

Karin and Volker, here is the book I recommended:

“The 360° Leader – Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization” by John C. Maxwell – Great book!

Have a wonderful week, and I look forward to our next Leaders Exchange!

Dear Myriam,

Once again thank you for organizing such an interesting and international call. I ejoyed it, as usual, and have learnt some new things along with getting some great book recommendations.

I do look forward to any future calls and particularly like the fact that we are going to prepare a topic in advance.

Keep up the good work.

Saludos de Valencia,

Gaby

Thank you Gaby! I’m very happy about the friendly and yet very professional atmosphere that has been created. The calls are interesting also thanks to the great contributions by every participant.
Looking forward to our next exchange!

Dear Myriam,

thanks for the great conference call. I enjoyed it very much and I am grateful for the exchange of ideas. Thanks also for the book recommendations.

I mentioned Reinhard Sprenger as a book author. You will find more information about him at http://www.sprenger.com/de/

Best wishes

Volker

Dear Myriam,
Thanks for your leadership. I always take away useful information and ideas from the group. I will put the book you suggest on my wish list and read it this year.

Dear Myriam, Dear all,

When I just did some research on the recommended book by John Maxwell, I found out delightedly, that I have been following him on Twitter for a while and he has been following me back. His user name is @johncmaxwel, if anyone is interested. He just published a new book called “Everyone communicates, few connect” which is also on my wish list now.

Cheers,

Gaby

That’s cool! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Danielle. The book refers mostly to people within an organization, however I believe it’s primarily a matter of mindset and the principles can be applied also to entrepreneurs.

Enjoy the week-end,
Myriam
