Does 100% focus mean we are giving our best?

By Myriam Callegarin • July 7th, 2010

I was recently talking with a smart and ambitious manager who had just been promoted. She was worried that her team might have troubles accepting her as their boss since she is younger than they are, and she therefore wanted to improve her leadership skills.

Running for SuccessWhen I asked her about her medium- to long-term goals she explained that she wanted to obtain an even higher position within one year. She said she works long hours, and even week-ends are mostly dedicated to her career goals.  From all the things she was telling me I understood that she is totally committed to her goal of becoming a very successful businesswoman, at almost any price, even at the price of her happiness.

Then we talked about how the different dimensions of our life are interconnected, about work-life balance and how it can improve performance. That’s where our communication somehow broke up. It felt as if that was a totally new perspective she was not ready to consider.

Do we really give our best, and can we only achieve our goal when we are 100%  focused on it? What if we were missing some short cuts along the way, just because we don’t look to the left or right? What if taking a break would give us the energy to move forward much faster, and the mental clarity to make better decisions? What does it take to really improve our leadership skills?
