Family-Conscious Career-Women: How Going to the Movies Changed My Life

November 10th, 2011 • By: Myriam Callegarin Business Innovation, Personal Leadership

A few years ago I was feeling really stuck. Why did everything feel so complicated and difficult? Who said that it’s possible to have it all? For example an exciting, fulfulling and financially rewarding work (or business), an emotionally stable family, time and freedom for the things that matter?

In my determination and persistance, I had tried to make it happen for years – with no success. How naive! What a dreamer! What an idealist!

One Friday night I was totally fed up. With everything. I had a quarrel with my husband and thought: “This is enough. Something’s got to change”. Of course I had no idea what and how, so I grabbed the car keys and off I went. What should I do now? In my thirst for lightness and freedom I thought of heading for the sea – but the idea of driving for 2 1/2 hours on the highway by night wasn’t thrilling. At least I knew I wanted to spend an enjoyable evening. So I thought of a couple of options, and the best one that came to my mind was this: “I want to go to the movies”.

I drove to the nearest Cineplex and purchased a ticket for a movie that sounded fun. While I was waiting there in the hall, all by myself, I was surrounded by couples and groups of friends walking around. That felt awkward… What might they think of me? But I was so determined to enjoy myself that I didn’t want to care. And I enjoyed myself! The movie turned out to be perfect for that night, a great combination of humor, romance and depth. And while I was there, sitting among all the crowd, laughing out loud with the others, I had my breakthrough:

“I can do anything I want!”

I can even go to the movies all alone and have a great time! What had stopped me from enjoying my life all those years?

ME! I could have gone to the movies countless of times, if I had wanted to! Whose permission had I been waiting for?
Mine!

And all of a sudden I realized that indeed, as long as I had been thinking “I can”, I had accomplished amazing things in my life – such as travelling to all of the countries in the world that I had circled on my world map as I was a teen-ager (My parents definitely didn’t have the money for that, and yes, that was my first Vision Board – even though I knew nothing about vision boards!), or such as living in Asia for a couple of years, or have an exciting career at Mercedes-Benz in Germany (yes, even that is something I had dreamt of!).

I had forgotten about how things had been possible when I fully believed they were possible. Or maybe that’s not fully true: I had this consciousness  inside of myself that things were possible, but my doubts and fears had been stronger.

So what happened after that breakthrough at the movies? I decided to open up for change. On the very next day, I did a few (small and BIG!) things I had been longing to do for years, but never had the courage to. I was full of both excitement and panick! But my determination was stronger :-) A new evolutionary era had started for me, gentle, loving and vibrant, that encompasses all areas of my life, including my business of course – and the amazing people I want to serve on this world. Including you, if you like!

“Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowers them or one that can literally save their lives.”
Tony Robbins

Have a magnificent day,

How to Make Space for Something New

How are you dealing with your desire for change, in your life, career or business? Maybe you’ve been questioning it, judging it, telling yourself why it’s not a good desire, or why it will not become reality. Because as a matter of fact, you don’t know HOW this change could happen, do you?

The problem is that your self-talk rollercoaster and the “not knowing how” keep your mind, body and energy stuck.

Imagine a suitcase at the end of your vacation, full with all your belongings. How do you get that last wine bottle into the suitcase, the one you really want to take home because it’s so special?

You need to make space for it

If you want something new into your life or work, you need to ALLOW IT TO HAPPEN. And you do so by making space for it.

Here are two ways to make space for something new.

Way #1. Clear your clutter

This is very practical and can be applied to anything from your computer to your desk, home, etc. Try it, and you’ll experience it’s highly energizing and inspiring effect!

Why? Because when you stop to decide which items you really want to keep and which ones to discard, it forces you to think about:

  • What you really LIKE
  • What you really WANT
  • What you are ready to LET GO OF
  • WHO you want to BE

PLUS

  • it makes you feel so much LIGHTER!

How you deal with your clutter is a great indicator of your level of courage in your life right now.

Way #2. Stop Thinking, Start Feeling

If you don’t know what you want, or how to get it, your mind starts spinning. Unfortunately, your thoughts can only lead you to places you know, but not to the places you don’t know yet. So your thoughts are actually limiting you.

If you want to get something new in your life, you can start by getting off the wheel of thoughts and by reconnecting with the silent and peaceful place in your heart. There is a deeper intution within yourself that can lead you to something wonderful in your career, business or life that you never envisioned before.

Here’s some ways you can stop thinking and start feeling:

  • Become more present and aware every day. Observe your thoughts, as well as your feelings, without judging them. Journaling might help.
  • Start a meditation course, learn breathing techniques.
  • Get into nature by yourself as often as you can.
  • Work with a professional coach who understands your deeper needs, and who can help you explore new and different perspectives.

There’s a wonderful book I can recommend, called ‘Inside-Out Healing: Transforming Your Life Through the Practice of Presence’ by Richard Moss.

Wonderful news!

You have everything you need to live the life you want. It’s just a matter of trusting yourself more. It’s a journey, and it starts with you. Because your career and business are much more than just your career and business!

Wishing you success & happiness,

If you were BOLD: 4 steps to build courage

September 26th, 2011 • By: Myriam Callegarin Business Innovation, Personal Leadership

“Courageous risks are life giving,
they help you grow, make you brave and better than you think you are.”

- Joan L. Curio

When did you stop being courageous?

Corporate managers are courageous, they travel around the globe helping their company increase their revenues. It takes courage to talk about millions of Dollars in front of very important people. So what happens to their courage when it comes to pursuing their own dreams and goals, such as creating something more meaningful and fulfilling in their life?

Entrepreneurs are courageous, they dare to listen to their heart, they make the leap and start their own business. It takes courage to say no to a regular paycheck. So what happens to their courage when it comes to charging what they are worth, and to getting in front of clients to close a sale?

All of a sudden, confidence crumbles down

That’s when the courageous corporate managers, the courageous entrepreneurs start hiding, procrastinating, finding all kind of excuses:

  • “I don’t have time now, I’ll think about it later (when I’m old)”
  • “Only few people really succeed (I know I cannot be one of them)”
  • “It’s silly/irresponsible/ungrateful to say no to the security of a regular paycheck, just because I’d love to pursue my dreams”
  • “I’m not good enough, I need more training.”
  • “I hate marketing and selling, people would laugh at me!”

Does any of this sound familiar? To me it does, I’ve been there!

How does it feel when you’re courageous? Step 1

Think about a challenge you SUCCESSFULLY faced in the past, something that required a lot of COURAGE and TRUST from you side. What was it?

Can you remember how that felt, when you had the courage to take that step? How did that make you feel? How did it feel in your body?

What did you learn about yourself from that successful experience?

Did that experience make you grow? Did you experience that you are actually capable of more than you used to believe?

Time for a decision: Step 2

Don’t worry, it won’t hurt :-)

There’s no need to make a decision about doing anything BOLD or COURAGEOUS now (feel free to do it if it makes you feel good!).

Also, there’s no need to decide NOW whether you are ready to stand up for who you are, or for what truly matters to you, especially if you’re not YET clear about what matters to you.

It’s just a very basic decision:

Do you want to become courageous AGAIN?

That’s it.

When you answer a conscious “YES” to that question, you are making a commitment to yourself to be brave and courageous when it comes to your personal and professional fulfillment.

So, is your answer ‘Yes’ or ‘No’? Write it down on paper, or say it out loud:

“NO, I don’t want to be courageous any more”.

“YES, I want to become courageous again”

How does this feel?

Are you struggling to answer? Does it feel like nonsense? Maybe it does, but who cares? It’s only about yourself!

If you were bold: Step 3

Now, if you feel really bold, make a list (or a Mind Map) of all the things you would do in your work (or life) IF YOU WERE REALLY COURAGEOUS.

For example:

- Tell your worst client that you stop working with them
- Leave your job and move to Mexico
- Speak at your local Chamber of Commerce
- Tell your boss that the project you’re working on is rubbish!

Jot down anything that comes to your mind, no matter how ridiculous it may sound! Do you have the courage to express your most ridiculous thoughts?

If you were bold: Step 4

And once you’ve written them down, start looking at them:

  • How does that statement feel?
  • Which part of it could actually be really good?
  • What could you actually do?

Have fun with it, and if you like, post your comments or share your bold actions in this blog.

Wishing you a wonderful day,

Myriam
